A few days ago we talked to you about Emotional Intelligence and described the skills that Reuver Bar-On established to create a model capable of measuring this psychosocial capacity.

Today, we will detail the factors that make up each of these skills.

Factors that determine EI

For each skill, Bar-On establishes a set of factors to take into account in its analysis and measurement:

Self-perception

  • Self-concept: That is to say therespect towards oneself and the understanding and acceptance of our weaknesses and
  • Self-awareness: or therecognition and understanding of our emotions and the awareness of the impact they have on our thoughts and actions.
  • Self-realization: or our willingness to voluntarily improve and to pursue important goals for yourself.

Interpersonal

  • Empathy: Are we able torecognize, understand and value how others feel and  consequently respect their feelings?
  • Interpersonal relationships: Do we develop and maintain satisfactory relationships withothers? Are we able to trust and have sympathy for others?
  • Social responsibility: Willingness to contribute to the welfare ofothers, be it groups of people or society in general.

Decision making

  • Resolution of problems: Can we find solutions to problemsinvolving emotions? Are we able to comprehend how they influence decision making?
  • Verifying reality: Dowe maintain objectivity and achieve emotions not altering our perception of things?
  • Impulse control: Do we control or manage to delay an impulse or theurge to act, thus avoiding impetuous decisions? .

Self-expression

  • Assertiveness: Do we communicate our feelings, beliefs and thoughts openly?Can we defend our rights and values in a socially acceptable way?
  • Emotional expression:  Do we express our feelingsopenly ?
  • Independence: We dependemotionally on others or behave in a free and autonomous way?

Stress management

  • Flexibility: Are we able to face situations or unpredictable ideas while adapting ouremotions, thoughts and behaviors to them?
  • Tolerance to stress: Do we facedifficult situations believing that we can handle and influence them?
  • Optimism: Do youkeep a positive attitude towards life? Do we keep hope, despite the difficulties?
